Irish Wheaten Bread

Wheaten bread is dense, hearty, bread with a hard crunchy crust. It's best toasted and spread thickly with butter!

I changed this recipe slightly from Barrys-Tea.com

4 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 1/2 tbl baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1. Preheat your oven to 350 F and butter a medium sized loaf pan.

2. Mix together the flour, baking soda, salt and sugar in a bowl.

3. Add all of the buttermilk and mix thoroughly until it reaches a doughy substance. If the dough doesn't stick, add a few more tablespoons of buttermilk.

4. Using a lightly floured surface, kneed the dough.

5. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in the buttered pan.

6. Bake for roughly 50 mins.

7. Take out of the oven and let it cool, then slice and serve.

Photos Galore

I've accumulated too many daily cell photos, so I just uploaded all of them to my Flickr account.

I included some photos from the Volunteer Park Conservatory I explored this afternoon. I like it better than the one in Golden Gate Park - they have a bromeliad/fern, and (super cool) cactus room!

New Pony Photos

The view from my window.
Clearly very old.
My favorite.

Years ago I bookmarked a cute illustration on Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast. It looked something like this:

Little did I know that one day I would be helping promote the artist's work! Sasquatch Books is publishing two adorable board books illustrated by the fabulous Kate Endle. She uses decorative paper glued to stretched canvas to make her collages.

One of the books she's publishing with us is about colors and one is about animals. The animal one, Who Hoo Are You? is my favorite, with characters like "Tipped-over Turtle" "Humpy Bumpy Camel" and "Pretty Prancing Pony." For a while we had some dummies laid out on the table outside my office, and every time pass I'd look at the pictures and go "awwwwww!"

Lit out a-grinin' to follow the sun

In my fruitless Youtube search for the "Davy Crockett" show intro (with the Wellingtons song), I found that the late Fess Parker starred in another Disney tv show as...Daniel Boone. He even wore that trademark coonskin cap. I sent my dad a half-joking email saying "what's the difference?" In his reply he says, "I never watched the show - slow moving, boring, no gay men." On that note, here's my belated tribute to Mr. Parker.

My mom got our dog DNA-tested.

Every since our neighbors found him in Palm Springs by the side of the road in a cage with a chicken, no one has been able to guess what breeds he might be a combination of. Ready? Apparently:
